Anglers reel in honors

The 13th annual River’s End Volunteer Fire Department Fishing Tournament attracted 83 anglers for the three-day event.

The wet tournament Oct. 2-4 included categories for adult anglers in redfish, speckled trout, flounder, croaker, the heaviest stringer and redfish with the most spots.

Results of the adult redfish category were first-place winner Ben Boatright with a 7-pounder; second-place finisher was John Churchill, 6.64; and in third was Louise Knight, 6.12.

For the speckled trout division, Joel Caravan got first place with a 4.98 pounder, followed by second place’s Blake Sullivan, 4.52; and in third, Josh Cole, 2.47.

The flounder category was won by James Hinsley, 3.78 pounds; second, Kathy Garza, 3.24; and in third, Jim Heathcock, 3.08.

Margaret Berryman won first in the croaker division with a 1.66-pounder. Merryman also took second, 1.60; and in third was M.D. George, 1.28.

For the heaviest stringer, Jana Gardner brought in 22.22 pounds to win first. The redfish with the most spots was caught by Billy Huett with 29 spots.

There was also a youth division:

Redfish: first, Andrew Lima, 5.08; second, Clayton Nagler, 3.90; third, Kyle Cates, 3.16.

Speckled trout: first, Alex Lima, 2.44; second, Nagler, 1.48; third, Nagler, 1.14.

Flounder: Andrew Lima, 1.76; no second- or third-place finishers.

Croaker: Andrew Lima, 1.08; second, Alex Lima, 1 pound; third, Alex Lima, 1 pound

The largest hardhead was caught by Wil Myers at 0.92 pounds; heaviest blue crab by Myers at 0.84; largest sand trout, Anthony Smith, 1.06; and redfish with most spots, Cates, with two spots. This year’s event raised money to buy a brush truck.
